[ English text below ] BIENNALE MUSICA 2026 Il 70. A CHILD OF SOUND The 70th International Festival of Contemporary Music (Venice, 10 > 24 October) draws inspiration from music considered by the Artistic Director Caterina Barbieri as “the cradle of the Spirit: an experience that reconnects us to a primal state of openness, freedom and creative power. The grace of a child who looks at the world with the wonder of their first gaze – or, better, their first listen – respecting its mystery, is the very same revolutionary grace with which music has the power to disarm us”. Barbieri explains: “Drawing inspiration from the “child of sound” as a symbol of both revolution and healing, the Biennale Musica 2026, titled A Child of Sound, presents a unique programme of world premieres and site-specific works, bringing together some of the most innovative and multifaceted voices in contemporary music, transcending rigid distinctions of genre, era and geography”. The programme includes the concerts with the soloists Laraaji, Keiji Haino, Walter Zanetti, Francesco Messina, Sarah Davachi, Clarissa Connelly, the ensembles Zwerm XL, Gigi Masin/The Wind Trio, PMCE - Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble, The Tallis Scholars, ONCEIM - Orchestre de Nouvelles Créations, Expérimentations et Improvisations Musicales, and the live sets of more than fifteen performers. The programme also includes the following initiatives throughout the Festival's duration: the installation Heaven Is Ours / O céu é nosso, a polyphonic celebration of Brazilian baloeiros; the installation Two Things In The World Seem To Be Only Once by Wyldie Bracewell for field recordings and archive recordings; the video documentaries Blissful Bun-Chan by Invernomuto and Document: Keiji Haino by Kazuhiro Shirao, both focused on the 2026 Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, Keiji Haino; and lastly Origine, a space for deep listening, Arcadia, an open ground for musical experimentation, Bar Nightingale Revisited, an audio-video installation by Masaru Hatanaka (these three located at the Arsenale Sale d'Armi), and Musica Libera, an installation/performance hosted at the Casa di reclusione femminile della Giudecca (Giudecca Women’s Detention Centre). The President of La Biennale di Venezia Pietrangelo Buttafuoco commented: “The powerful metaphor of the listening child reminds us that contemporaneity cannot be reduced to simply belonging to our own time. To be contemporary means to search for what is not yet fully visible in the present, to listen to what has not yet found a voice. From this perspective even anarchy may regain its original meaning, understood as a suspension of the established order, the freedom necessary for an unexpected form to emerge. A Child of Sound, then, is the moment in which the sound is still fresh, the listener has not yet decided what to expect, and the music can finally reveal itself”. |
